Thomas Haase

Tom Haase is a Doctoral Candidate at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), University of Pittsburgh. Tom has focused his doctoral studies on issues related to international security and disaster management, and he seeks to understand the extent to which administrative networks influence the resilience of communities under the threat of disaster. He recently returned from a trip Indonesia, where he conducted field research for his dissertation, which investigates the evolution of the Indonesian tsunami response network following the Great Sumatran Earthquake and Tsunami of 26 December 2004. Tom joined the IISIS Team while at GSPIA, and is currently working on National Science Foundation Project DRU 0729456: Designing Resilience for Communities at Risk: Decision Support for Collective Action under Stress. This project explores new ways of integrating information technology into the processes of detecting, measuring and communicating the risk of near-shore tsunamis to emergency managers in exposed coastal communities. He has also worked as an Adjunct Faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh, and has taught courses in administrative law, public policy and global governance. As an undergraduate, Tom focused his studies on history and political science, and was awarded his Bachelors of Liberal Arts in 1998 from Chadron State College, Chadron, Nebraska. Following graduation, Tom moved to Pennsylvania, where he earned his Law Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 2002.
